Mary Anne Schmitt assumed her new job as the president of New American Schools last week, replacing Donald Fuerstein. Ms. Schmitt, 35, was previously the chief operating officer for New American Schools, a private, nonprofit group based in Arlington, Va., that promotes the use of comprehensive improvement models by schools.

Donald B. Trombley

The New York State Council of School Superintendents has named Donald B. Trombley president of the Albany-based council. He is the superintendent of the Corning-Painted Post City School District, which has 5,700 students.

Harcourt School Publishers in Orlando, Fla., which produces materials, has announced the appointment of Steven Gandy as its president and chief executive officer. Mr. Gandy was the executive vice president of national sales at Harcourt and replaces Anthony Lucki.

Mr. Gandy is succeeded in that job by Suzanne Davis.

James Tracy

James Tracy, 39, is the new headmaster of Boston University Academy, a preparatory school with 116 students in Boston. He was previously an adjunct professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Boston and a special assistant to Boston University Chancellor John R. Silber.

Joseph Tafoya

Joseph Tafoya has begun his new position as the director of the U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity, which serves 112,000 students, primarily the dependents of military personnel, in overseas schools. He was previously deputy director for domestic schools.
