Robert E. Slavin

Robert E. Slavin and Hugh B. Price have won distinguished-service awards from the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The council, a Washington-based organization of state education leaders, presented the award to Mr. Slavin, 50, for his work as the chairman of the Success for All Foundation, a national school-improvement program based in Baltimore. Mr. Slavin is also a co-director of the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk at Johns Hopkins University.

Hugh B. Price

Mr. Price, 58, received the award for his contributions to urban and minority education and for his work at the National Urban League in New York City. Mr. Price, its president and chief executive officer, has made the Urban League a powerful advocate for high-quality urban education, the council said.

The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., has appointed John F. Green to be the 15th head of school. Mr. Green, 41, is the dean of faculty at St. Paul’s School in Concord, N.H., and will begin his tenure at Peddie next July. Each of the private, coeducational college-preparatory schools serves some 500 students.

John Frederickson

John Fredrickson has been promoted to vice president of finance and planning at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The board certifies teachers who meet national standards of accomplishment.

Mr. Fredrickson, 49, joined the teaching-standards board in 1994 as its controller and treasurer. He will work out of the Southfield, Mich., office of the Arlington, Va.-based private organization.
