Goggles for Science Labs: Cheaper Than Lawsuits

To the Editor:

Just a quick comment about two photos with your In Perspective story “The Four-Year Plan” (Jan. 7, 2009):

It’s quite scary to think that the state of Alabama is requiring high school students to take four credits of science to graduate without teaching them the rules of safety in the lab. Yet the pictures on your front page and Page 29 show students engaged in chemistry laboratory experiments without wearing chemical-splash goggles. Shame on the teachers who allow this, and the editor who let these pictures go into print. With all of the money spent on such great labs and equipment, Alabama educators should have spent a little more on goggles. They’re cheaper than lawsuits.
