On July 30, 2013, my Education Futures opinion blog published its first post on edweek.org. Over the last five years, I have enjoyed writing about the future of education, but all things must come to an end. As of November 20, 2018, I will no longer be writing this blog, a decision that I made after much contemplation. This frees my time up to finish a few book projects and spend more time with my family. Also, it opens the door for other voices to emerge, ready to move the field of education to its next phase.
We have written a lot of influential blog posts, and I would like to spotlight a few of them. Over three years ago, I wrote a post for my Education Futures opinion blog on edweek.org, entitled “10 Reasons the U.S. Education System Is Failing.” I listed ten problems and issues that prevent the U.S. education system from living up to its potential. Even years later, my list--which addressed economic shortfalls, gender and racial disparities, parent engagement, and more--still periodically shows up as one of edweek.org’s top-read blog posts of the day.
Because of this, Education Week thought it would be interesting to revisit this list in some way, and I wholeheartedly agreed, and we published the Commentary 10 (More) Reasons Why the U.S. Education System Is Failing. Since most of the reasons that I listed in the original piece still rung true, I decided not to rehash them. Instead, we created a new list that discussed newly emerging problems and issues with the U.S. Education system.
In closing, I want to take the time to thank all my readers for their support. Also, I want to thank the Commentary editors over at Education Week, for allowing me to be a part of the team, and for their support and guidance. You can continue to read my work over at The Edvocate and The Tech Edvocate, two education publications that I currently own and edit. Au Revoir; goodbye until we meet again.
