Male Vs. Female: Male high school teachers tend to consider female principals less effective than female teachers do, according to Valerie Lee, a University of Michigan researcher. Basing her conclusion on an analysis of data from the massive High School and Beyond Survey, Lee found that male teachers working for female principals feel “especially disenfranchised.’' She believes this may help explain why such a high percentage of principals are male.

The Effectiveness Of Sex Ed: A study published in the November/December issue of Family Planning Perspectives indicates that sex education classes are linked to behavioral changes that could lead to sexual abstention or effective use of contraceptives. The study surveyed 1,444 adolescents ages 13 to 19 who participated in publicly funded sex education programs in Texas and California. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development, two foundations, and the state of Texas. Reprints of the study are available from Susan Tew, Alan Guttmacher Institute, 111 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10003; (212) 254-5656.
