“Preliminary Report on No Child Left Behind in Indian Country” is published by the National Indian Education Association.

Some educators believe that accountability requirements in the federal No Child Left Behind Act have caused schools to give short shrift to teaching Native American cultures and languages, according to a report by the Washington-based National Indian Education Association.

The report—based on testimony at 11 hearings by the NIEA that were held in Indian communities over the past year—says some educators said native Indian languages and cultures are not taught because Indian children spend all their time doing academic drills in reading and math to prepare for state standardized tests.
