Massachusetts is seeing progress in its effort to crack down on school buses that idle too long in front of schools.
State law limits most engine idling to five minutes or less.
Early last fall, inspectors from the state department of environmental protection found violations by 10 percent of the buses observed and at 35 percent of schools visited—resulting in 11 citations.
Second-round inspections later in the fall found violations by only 2 percent of the school buses and at 14 percent of the schools visited—resulting in three citations.
