Information-collection requests. The Education Department published, in the March 8 Federal Register, an information-collection request that has been proposed by the Office of Secondary and Elementary Education and Office of Vocational and Adult Education. The Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980 requires that the Office of Management and Budget give the public and interested federal agencies advance notice of and the opportunity to comment on proposed surveys and other requests for information that will be used by the Education Department. National Institute of Education. The Education Department published, in the March 12 Federal Register, proposed regulations for the National Institute of Education (nie) direct-grant programs under the General Education Provisions Act of 1973. The regulations would consolidate 10 existing regulations that affect nie’s direct-grant programs into one set of regulations implementing the act. Comments must be received by April 11. Special education. The Education Department published, in the March 12 Federal Register, final regulations to implement the Client Assistance Program under the Rehabilitation Act of 1984. The program authorizes state governors to choose the private and public agencies that will assist the clients and client applicants participating in the program. The regulations take effect either 45 days after publication in the Federal Register or later, if Congress takes certain adjournments. Special education. The Education Department announced, in the March 8 Federal Register, that it is accepting applications for one new project under the Educational Media Research, Production, Distribution, and Training program. The program is funded under the Education of the Handicapped Act.
