The House has approved a bill that would bar schools from requiring parents to medicate their children as a condition of attending school.

Rep. John P. Kline, R-Minn., sponsored the Child Medication Safety Act, which passed 407-12 on Nov. 16. He was also the legislator behind a similar provision that was approved a part of the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. That provision affects only students with disabilities; the new measure would apply to all students.

“Parents should never be forced to medicate their child against their better judgment to ensure their child will receive educational services,” Rep. Kline said in a statement.
