Girls appear to be outperforming boys in many important categories of educational achievement, according to a recent federal study.
“Trends in Educational Equity of Girls and Women,” is available online from the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.
The report—produced by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics—says that 4th grade girls outperformed their male peers on reading and writing assessments, that girls are less likely than boys to repeat a grade and to drop out of high school, and that female high school seniors tend to have higher educational aspirations than their male counterparts.
But the report points out that young women are still underrepresented in some fields of study, such as computer science, engineering, and physical sciences.
