Georgia high school students will continue to study the Civil War in U.S. history classes under the social studies curriculum adopted this month by the state board of education.

The curriculum is vastly different from the controversial K-12 guidelines proposed last winter that would have limited coverage of the Civil War—or what is still described as the War Between the States by many Georgians—to elementary and middle schools. (“Ga. History Plan Stirs Civil War Fuss,” Feb. 18, 2004.)

Other parts of the draft curriculum, including condensed study of ancient history in high school, fueled widespread criticism among teachers and parents.

The final guidelines maintain most traditional content at each grade level. The state has been revising curricula in core subjects over the past two years. The state board is expected to consider new mathematics standards by the end of the year.
