Continuing a long-running series of changes in management and governance, Connecticut’s largest school district has chosen a well-known education leader as its new superintendent.
Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez, who appoints a majority of the city’s school board members, announced last week the selection of former Cincinnati Superintendent Steven J. Adamowski as the 24,000-student district’s new chief.
Mr. Adamowski’s appointment follows a decade of leadership shuffles in Hartford, including a state takeover, the hiring and later ouster of a prominent local superintendent from New York City, the return of a locally elected board, and now mayoral control.
A former Connecticut educator and most recently a senior fellow at the American Institutes for Research, based in Washington, Mr. Adamowski led the Cincinnati district from 1998 to 2002, during which he worked to decentralize decisionmaking to individual schools.
