More information on the School Safety Initiative is available online from the American Red Cross.

Preliminary results from an American Red Cross study suggest that after 5th grade students do not learn any more than they did up to that point about how to prepare for or react to violent incidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

Researchers, who analyzed data from 10,000 elementary, middle, and high school students in eight cities, found that emergency-preparedness knowledge generally increases for students from kindergarten though 5th grade. But after that grade level, knowledge about how to prepare for and react to such events tends not to increase beyond what they had already learned.
