“Closing the Gap: Moving From Rhetoric to Reality in Opening Doors to Higher Education for African-American Students” is available from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

African-Americans age 25 and older are more likely to have dropped out of high school than graduated from college, says a report by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Twelve percent of black adults had earned a bachelor’s degree in 2002, while 14 percent had not earned a high school diploma, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau used for the report. Whites in the same age group, by contrast, are nearly three times more likely to have a college degree than lack a high school diploma.
