Resolution: A federal judge on June 22 approved a settlement that will phase out a city-to-suburb busing plan over 18 years. The settlement includes a commitment by the Indianapolis Housing Agency to steps designed to increase the number of low-income and minority families who can find suburban housing--a rare attempt to attack residential segregation within a school desegregation settlement.
Nashville, Tenn.
Students: 71,000; 43 percent African-American.
Desegregation history: In 1955, a group of black plaintiffs sued the Nashville school district.
Resolution: A combined city-county council on June 23 approved a spending plan that will pay for $206.8 million in school construction over five years to reduce cross-town busing. Among other items, the plan calls for 15 new elementary and middle schools, additions to seven middle schools, and renovations at 11 elementary schools.
