A 42-year-old man hijacked a Dade County, Fla., school bus carrying 13 special-education students last week and led police on an hourlong chase through Miami and Miami Beach before he was shot and killed.

None of the children were seriously injured, Metro-Dade police said.

The suspect, identified as Catalino Sang, a native of the Dominican Republic, had recently been fired from his job as a waiter and said he had a dispute with the Internal Revenue Service over undisclosed tips, police said.

Police said the man forced his way onto the bus about 8:30 a.m. Nov. 2 as it was taking the special-needs students to Blue Lakes Elementary School in Miami. An anonymous caller notified police, who followed the bus as the suspect gave directions to the driver, at one point ordering the driver to crash into a police car.

At separate stops during the chase, the man released two of the children and two adults who were on the bus. They told police the suspect was armed with an explosive device and threatening to harm the children.

As the bus proceeded through city streets, a police officer threw a portable telephone through the window, and officers tried to negotiate with the man.

He first told police he was headed for a local IRS office, then ordered the driver to take him to the Miami Beach seafood restaurant where he had worked.

As the bus stopped outside the restaurant, police shot and killed the suspect. One 7-year-old boy received minor injuries from broken glass during the gunfire, police said.

The device the man claimed was a bomb turned out to be harmless, police said.
