An article in the April 4, 2001, issue of Education Week (“Judge Finds Flaws in Alaska’s Funding of School Facilities”) misstated student enrollment in the Bering Strait school district in Alaska. The district enrolls 1,800 students.
An article about bilingual education in the April 18, issue (“Immigration Spawns Bills Similar to Proposition 227") misquoted Gabe A. Winslow, a legislative assistant to Oregon state Sen. Charles Starr. Mr. Winslow should have been quoted as saying that in Oregon, “all schools with LEP [limited-English-proficient] students offer a bilingual education program, where actual subjects are taught by teachers in the native language.”
In a story about class-size-reduction research in the Feb. 28, issue, (“Research: Sizing Up Small Classes”), Barbara Nye was misidentified as a principal investigator for studies of Tennessee’s Student/Teacher Achievement Ratio project, known as Project STAR. While Ms. Nye has been involved in follow-up studies stemming from that project, the principal investigators for the original Project STAR research were Charles M. Achilles, John K. Folger, John M. Johnston, and Helen Pate- Bain.
