A coalition of Connecticut municipal leaders and education groups is calling for big increases in state school aid after releasing an analysis last week of what it says would be the cost of providing an adequate education for most of the state’s students.

According to the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding, the state must more than double its current K-12 budget of $1.4 billion to pay half the amount needed to give students sufficient learning opportunities to meet academic-performance standards.

To determine how much an adequate education would cost in Connecticut, the coalition hired Augenblick, Palaich and Associates, a Denver-based consulting group that has helped other states do similar studies. The findings are based on educators’ views on the programs and practices needed to ensure student success.
