A 15-year-old student at DuSable High School in Chicago’s South Side, was fatally shot last week in school in what was described as a “street gang” type of conflict.
The student, Dartagnan Young, who was shot in the chest in a hallway as he walked between morning classes, died soon after being taken to the hospital.
“Witnesses told school officials there was arguing outside a third-floor classroom at the school,” said Robert Saigh, a school-board spokesman. “Apparently, some of the arguing involved talk about a street gang.”
A 16-year-old boy, said to be re4sponsible for the shooting, has been taken into custody by the police.
This is the first time street-gang violence has invaded the school building, according to Mr. Saigh. DuSable High School is in a “poverty-stricken and high-crime area,” he said, but the school has “adequate security.” As a result of the shooting, Mr. Saigh said, the school will be under greater police surveillance.
Since DuSable High School is one of four Chicago city schools to have a health clinic on the premises, students affected by last week’s shooting have the opportunity to seek counseling at the clinic, Mr. Saigh said.--jw
