Taking Root

The No Child Left Behind Act requires states to define and identify “persistently dangerous” schools. During the 2003-04 school year, only 38 schools in four states met those state-defined criteria. By this school year, the number of states had dropped to three and the number of schools to 26.

Note: Data represent the 2004-05 school year.
