President Bush traveled to a school in Greensboro, N.C., last week to renew his call for the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.

“I think it would be a huge mistake for the United States Congress not to reauthorize this important piece of legislation,” he said.

“I’m not suggesting the law shouldn’t be improved; it should be improved,” Mr. Bush said on Oct. 18 at Waldo C. Falkener Elementary School in the 70,000-student Guilford County school district. He said he had heard complaints that some school districts are posting their annual achievement results for one school year after the beginning of the next one.

“So the bureaucracy, frankly, has got to be a little more facile in getting the results out,” he said.

The visit was the second by the president to a school this month to promote the reauthorization of the NCLB law, which is scheduled to be taken up by Congress next year. On Oct. 5, he made similar remarks at a charter school in Washington. (“Bush Says He’s Ready to Fight for Renewal of NCLB,” Oct. 11, 2006.)
