The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York has announced it will close six of its 232 elementary schools at the end of the academic year.

Each of the schools had experienced a steady decline in enrollment, according to Joseph Zwilling, the director of communications for the archdiocese, which encompasses three of New York City’s boroughs plus seven counties north of the city.

Schools of the archdiocese enroll 107,000 students. Mr. Zwilling said the six schools received $3 million in subsidies from their parishes and the archdiocese during the past two school years.

Earlier this month, the Diocese of Brooklyn announced it would close 26 Catholic elementary schools in Brooklyn and Queens at the end of the school year, but it plans to reopen four of them as regional schools.
