The chief of staff to the mayor of Denver has been named the city’s new schools superintendent.

The Denver board of education unanimously selected Michael Bennet, a lawyer who formerly worked for a local investment company, over two veteran educators June 27. Mr. Bennet has been chief of staff to Mayor John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, for two years.

Mr. Bennet, who began his job July 1, replaces Jerry Wartgow, who led the 70,000-student district for four years and announced his resignation in February. Also interviewed were Patricia Harvey, the superintendent of the St. Paul, Minn., public schools, and Christine Johnson, the president of the Community College of Denver.

Ms. Harvey, who has led the 42,000-student St. Paul district for six years, said last month that she would resign as of Dec. 31.
