Educators now have the information and the means to close achievement gaps between current student performance and the high academic standards set for all students, concludes a report by the National Association of State Boards of Education.
The report from the Alexandria, Va.-based association was the product of a yearlong study by a committee of 22 state board of education members and other education leaders. Among other recommendations to close achievement gaps, it suggests that communities provide universal access to high-quality preschool, target existing resources toward students who need them most, and keep more highly qualified teachers and principals in high-need schools. The report also highlights several states, districts, and individual schools that have implemented successful programs to close such gaps.
