The 2009 ExploraVision Awards competition, sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association, encourages K-12 students to think progressively about contemporary technology and envision what it will be like 20 years from now. According to the ExploraVision organizers, “students will invent our future. They’ll discover new, improved technologies and scientific advancements that will create tomorrow’s world.” The contest is intended to, “challenge [students] to open our eyes and minds.”
The contest requires students to work in groups with two to four of their peers to examine any contemporary technology, explain its significance, and then attempt to imagine that technology in the future. Finally, the group creates a report that explains the its vision of the future technology.
The national first prize is a U.S. EE Savings Bond worth $10,000 for each student on the winning team. Second place, regional prizes, and honorable mentions will also be given out. Projects are due no later than January 28, 2009.
