A new report shares lessons from some innovative principal-training programs across the country.

Much like their teacher-preparation counterparts, principal-preparation programs are often derided as out of touch with what modern educators need to be successful in the school setting.

The report, however, stresses that such training should be experiential in nature, giving aspiring principals opportunities to learn from their mistakes in leading other adults. It also says continuous support is necessary for new principals as they transition into their roles, and after they become established.

The programs are part of a coalition known as the Rainwater Leadership Alliance. The alliance is financed in part by The Rainwater Charitable Trusts and the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation of Los Angeles.
