Ohio Community Charter Schools Value-Added Data Analysis

Nearly half, 48 percent, of Ohio’s charter schools within the state’s eight largest school districts exceeded the state’s expectations for improved learning from the 2005-06 school year to 2006-07, compared with 39 percent of traditional public schools in those districts, concludes a study by the Ohio Alliance of Public Charter Schools, a Columbus, Ohio-based nonprofit that advocates for charter schools.

The data for this report was gathered by examining scores from the Ohio Achievement Test for grades 4 through 8 in the 115 charter schools and 397 traditional public schools within the eight largest, urban school districts in the state.

However, the study found that charter schools did not outperform traditional public schools in three of the eight districts. Those were the Canton, Columbus, and Dayton school systems.
