States need to establish college-readiness standards that high school students must meet before they graduate, suggests a report by the Atlanta-based Southern Regional Education Board.

The report examined high school graduation requirements, dual enrollment opportunities, early out-reach programs, college placement standards, and other policies in each of its 16 member states. It found that some states had begun to align high school course requirements with college admissions criteria. Some had raised statewide standards in order to get more students ready for college. But “no state has done it all,” according to the report.
