The Connecticut state board of education unanimously voted last week to appoint Mark K. McQuillan, a longtime Massachusetts educator, to be the state’s new education commissioner.

Mr. McQuillan, a former teacher, administrator, and district superintendent, served as deputy education commissioner in Massachusetts from 2002 to 2004.

Since 2004, Mr. McQuillan has been the executive director of the Education Collaborative for Greater Boston, a nonprofit provider of education services to 20 Boston-area school districts.

Mr. McQuillan, 58, is to start his new job in April and will earn an annual salary of $170,000. He will succeed the interim education commissioner, George Coleman, who has held the job since Betty J. Sternberg resigned last summer.
