“Progress for Children: A Report Card on Immunization” is available from UNICEF .

More than 27 million children worldwide who are less than 12 months old have not been immunized against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus, and more than 29 million have not been immunized against measles, a study by UNICEF has found.

In industrialized countries—which the report defines as the United States, Western European nations, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel—95 percent of children in that age group received vaccines against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus, and 92 percent received measles vaccines. In western and central Africa, by contrast, only 52 percent of children that age were immunized against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus, and 48 percent were immunized against measles.
