Sonia G. Chessen has become the first executive director of the National Board for Education Sciences.

Ms. Chessen, 42, most recently worked as the chief of staff in the office of the assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the U.S. Health and Human Services Department. She started her new job this month.

The education sciences board is a 15-member panel that advises the Institute of Education Sciences, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education.
