Accountability Laws Must Drive School Improvement, Report Says

States in the South must quickly close achievement gaps between students from different racial and ethnic groups, and will succeed in doing so only if academic standards are high enough, says a report from the Atlanta-based Southern Regional Education Board.

While many Southern states have led the nation in adopting school accountability laws, states in the region should set higher standards for student achievement, the report suggests. Data in the report show that substantial numbers of schools with favorable state ratings actually do not meet test-score goals under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
