Teach For America Moves Institute to Philadelphia
Teach For America, the New York City-based organization that trains promising college graduates to work in urban and rural schools, is moving its Northeastern regional summer training institute from New York City to Philadelphia this year.
Beginning June 26, roughly 750 teacher-recruits will spend five weeks in training at Temple University, and their internships will be spent working in summer school in the Philadelphia school district.
Once they complete their preparation, about 125 of the new teachers will stay to work in Philadelphia, to help make up teacher shortages there.
The remainder will take assignments in other urban and rural districts throughout the country that serve low-income enrollments. The recruits commit to their teaching assignment for two years.
Since 1990, TFA has trained some 12,000 teachers.
