Andre J. Hornsby, the superintendent of the Prince George’s County, Md., public schools, is reportedly under investigation by federal as well as state authorities for his dealings with vendors of educational software.

The Sun newspaper in Baltimore and The Washington Post reported this month that the FBI, U.S. Attorney Thomas M. DiBiagio, and the Maryland state prosecutor’s office are looking into allegations of wrongdoing. In addition, state lawmakers who represent the suburban Washington county have requested a legislative audit, and the school system’s ethics panel is asking questions.

The probes were touched off by news that Mr. Hornsby had accepted a free trip to South Africa in 2003 from a software company and has a live-in relationship with a saleswoman for another software company that does business with his 139,000-student district. (“Questionable Business Deals Renew Interest in Ethics Codes,” Oct. 27, 2004.)

Mr. Hornsby did not respond to a request for comment last week.
