Thomas W. Payzant

The award is sponsored by the Washington-based Council of the Great City Schools and Philadelphia-based Aramark Education, a division of Aramark Corp. that provides food, facility, and other support services to school districts and higher education institutions.

Mr. Payzant, 64, has led the 63,000-student Boston district for 10 years. His career has also included service as the superintendent of the San Diego schools and as an assistant U.S. secretary of education under President Clinton.

As part of the award, Mr. Payzant received a $10,000 college scholarship that he may present to any graduating senior in his district, or to a senior in the district from which he graduated, the 8,960-student Quincy, Mass., system.
