Sister Carol Anne Smith, the superintendent of the Diocese of Cleveland schools and a staunch supporter of a state-sponsored voucher program in the city, recently announced that she will step down in June.

Sister Smith, 54, who led the 64,000-student schools of the Roman Catholic diocese for the past 11 years, started her career in 1971 as an English and religion teacher at the all-girls, 865-student Magnificat High School, a Catholic school in Rocky River, Ohio.

The voucher program in Cleveland gives parents state aid to send their children to private schools. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last June that the inclusion of religious schools—most of them Catholic—in the program is constitutional.

The Alexandria, Va.-based NASBE represents state and territorial boards of education.

McGraw-Hill Children’s Publishing has named Gary F. Richardson its new education publisher.

Mr. Richardson, 53, was previously the publisher of Zonderkidz, a division of the Zondervan Publishing House in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Columbus, Ohio-based McGraw-Hill Children’s Publishing is a subsidiary of McGraw-Hill Education, a pre-K-12 educational publisher.
