Sister Carol Anne Smith , the superintendent of the Diocese of Cleveland schools and a staunch supporter of a state-sponsored voucher program in the city, recently announced that she will step down in June.

Sister Smith, 54, who led the 64,000-student schools of the Roman Catholic diocese for the past 11 years, started her career in 1971 as an English and religion teacher at the all-girls, 865-student Magnificat High School, a Catholic school in Rocky River, Ohio.
