Here are references for some of the more recent studies and literature reviews on small schools:

  • Small Schools, Great Strides:A Study of New Small Schools in Chicago, a book-length study on Chicago’s small-schools movement, by Patricia A. Wasley, Michelle Fine, Matt Gladden, Nicole E. Holland, Sherry P. King, Esther Mosak, and Linda C. Powell, published in 2000 by the Bank Street College of Education in New York City. The study is available online at http://www.bankstreet.edu/html/news/releases/smschool.html.
  • Craig B. Howley and Robert Bickel have produced numerous studies on small schools. The authors synthesize their research in “When it Comes to Schooling ... Small Works,” a report published by the Rural School and Community Trust Policy Program in February 2000. It’s available online at www.ruraledu.org/sapss.html.
  • “Current Literature on Small Schools,” published by the U.S. Department of Education’s ERIC Clearinghouse on Rural Education and Small Schools in January 1999, by Mary Anne Raywid. Read it online at www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed425049.html.
  • “School Size in Chicago Elementary Schools: Effects on Teachers’ Attitudes and Students’ Achievement,” by Valerie E. Lee and Susanna Loeb, published in American Educational Research Journal in spring 2000.
  • “High School Size: Effects on Budgets and Performance in New York City,” by Leanna Stiefel, Patrice Iatarola, Norm Fruchter, and Robert Berne, published in spring 2000 in Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis.
  • Small Schools: Big Imaginations, a book-length report published by the Chicago-based Cross City Campaign for Urban School Reform in 1998 and edited by Michelle Fine.
