School Administrators’ Group Names President, Director

Roland C. Haun, the executive secretary of the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents, has been named the president of the American Association of School Administrators.

Mr. Haun, a former superintendent of the Fort Knox, Ky., schools, was expected to assume the one-year post this month.

The A.A.S.A. this month also tapped Paul Houston to be the executive director of the 18,000-member group.

Mr. Houston, who has been the superintendent of the Riverside, Calif., schools since 1991, will replace Richard Miller, who is retiring after eight years in the position.

Chiefless in Seattle: In a surprise announcement, William Kendrick, the Seattle superintendent of schools, has said he will step down when his contract ends in July 1996. Addressing the school board this month, Mr. Kendrick said that he made a five- to 10-year commitment when he took the job in 1986 and that he wants to pursue alternative careers and opportunities.

Mr. Kendrick is generally praised for his work to improve relations with Seattle’s teachers’ union and businesses, but his efforts to desegregate the schools and improve minority test scores and academic achievement have received mixed reviews.

The school board says its search for a successor could take up to a year and could lead to a buy-out of Mr. Kendrick’s contract.
