The House Subcommittee on Human Resources held a hearing on Oct. 28 to showcase a Justice Department report that outlines a comprehensive strategy for handling chronic juvenile offenders.

The House Education and Labor Committee held its final hearing Oct. 27 on the proposed “school-to-work opportunities act.’' A Senate committee is expected to mark up the bill as early as this week.

Regulatory Relief

The Education Department has announced regulatory relief under federal student aid programs for areas affected by flooding in the Midwest, such as allowing states to carry over funds between academic years and extending the grace period for repaying loans. The notice appeared in the Oct. 6 Federal Register; the rules are to take effect 45 days after publication.

Proposed Rules

The Education Department has proposed rules setting new disclosure requirements for higher-education institutions, including loan information and statistics on sexual-assault crimes. The notice appeared in the Oct. 22 Federal Register; comments are due Nov. 22.
