Alternatives: The National Association of Biology Teachers will hold a series of workshops this school year to familiarize educators with proper procedures for handling live animals and to introduce them to alternatives to dissection. The sessions will be held in California, Florida, New Jersey, and Virginia. The workshops will be conducted by Mary Louise Bellamy, the association’s education director, and Kathleen Frame, a biology teacher at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va. For more information, contact Bellamy at the NABT, 11250 Roger Bacon Drive, Suite 19, Reston, VA 22090; (703) 471-1134.

School For Social Studies: John Rimberg, a professor of sociology at Pembroke (N.C.) State University, is leading a drive to establish a statewide, residential school for social studies in North Carolina. If the plan succeeds, the new school would be the first of its kind in the nation. As envisioned by Rimberg, the school would begin with the 11th grade. Students would be required to take at least one language along with intensive surveys of the culture, geography, and history of the countries in which it is spoken.
