With common-standards adoption season in full swing, states have been doing the policy equivalent of comparison-shopping. Many have done alignment studies, or “crosswalks,” between their own standards and the common core, a process that lays bare the overlaps—or gaps—between the two sets.
Take a look at crosswalks from Pennsylvania and California for a taste of how this is getting done. (You’ll find Pennsylvania’s referred to here as “evaluation of alignment” and California’s here as a grade-by-grade analysis.)
As I’ve told you before, a couple of national organizations, Achieve and the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, are gearing up to provide comparability tools as well.
