The Obama administration is pushing to get federally funded research into the hands of educators faster.
In a memo sent last week, the White House office of science and technology policy directed all major federal research agencies, including the Institute of Education Sciences and the National Science Foundation, to “make results of federally funded research publicly available free of charge within 12 months after original publication.”
Agencies have six months to devise plans to make both studies and their underlying data sets available to “read, download, and analyze digitally,” as well as make research easier to sift through online.
The policy comes in response to a petition with more than 65,000 names that was submitted last spring through the administration’s “We the People” initiative.
