The U.S. Department of Education sent applications and guidance last week to the states for Title I school improvement grants, a $125 million fund that was designed to help schools struggling to meet the goals of the No Child Left Behind Act.
The money will be distributed through a formula that is similar to that used for other federal grants to schools that serve disadvantaged students. States must submit their applications by Nov. 20.
Once they receive the money, state education agencies must allocate at least 95 percent of it to school districts with schools that are not making the law’s achievement targets.
