Donald Graham, a former owner of The Washington Post, has teamed up with Henry R. Muñoz III, one of the Democratic Party’s top fundraisers, and Carlos Gutierrez, the commerce secretary under President George W. Bush, to raise $25 million to establish TheDream.US, a fund that will provide college scholarships to low-income undocumented immigrants ineligible for federal financial aid.
Potential recipients have to graduate from a U.S. high school with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or earn a General Educational Development certificate with a score equivalent to 2.5 or higher; demonstrate financial need; and qualify for the Obama administration’s deferred-action program, which relieves eligible undocumented youths from deportation.
A dozen higher education institutions have agreed to partner with TheDream.US.
