Lawmakers in South Carolina have until February to draft legislation to improve the state’s rural schools.
The deadline was issued late last month by the state supreme court, less than a year after it ruled South Carolina has not met its constitutional duty to provide a quality education to children in low-income schools.
That ruling was sought by 39 rural districts that sued the state in 1993, alleging they did not have enough money to educate their students.
