Gov. Theodore R. Kulongoski (D) • March 21
Gov. Kulongoski’s State of the State speech called broadly for more investment in Oregon’s education system, from preschool to graduate school, but included no specific dollar figures for K-12 schools. He proposed restoring art, music, and physical education classes to schools, and reducing class sizes across the board. The governor called for more trained math and science teachers, and advocated stronger programs of career and technical education, as well as more financial aid for Oregon’s college students.
