The annual leadership conference for the groups that approve and oversee charters schools is taking place this week in Miami, and I’m here to cover the event and share some of the highlights with you.

Hosted by the National Association of Charter School Authorizers, the conference is focusing on an area of the charter sector that has been getting more attention lately: the authorizers. It may sound wonky, but authorizers serve an important role in the charter school ecosystem because, oftentimes, the quality of a charter school reflects the quality of its authorizer.

Nationally, authorizing agencies and practices are far from uniform, and the number and types of authorizers, which can include local school districts, nonprofits, and universities, vary greatly from state to state.

On tap at the NACSA leadership conference are several sessions that speak to some of the big issues facing the charter sector, such as replicating good schools and catching financial fraud in others.

I’m here in Miami through Thursday covering the conference for Education Week both on the Charters & Choice blog and on Twitter @ChartersNChoice.

Stay tuned.
