The number of children younger than 18 who receive federal food assistance has doubled since the economic downturn in 2007, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data.
One in 5 children, or 16 million, got food stamps in 2014, compared with about 9 million in 2007, data in the 2014 Current Population Survey’s annual supplement show.
The data analysis also finds that of 73.7 million American children younger than 18, 27 percent live with only one parent, up from only 9 percent in 1960, and 10 percent live with a grandparent.
