Student writing skills can be improved in the classroom through the use of formative writing assessments, a new report says.
Formative assessments enable teachers to give students regular feedback, track their progress, and encourage them to evaluate their own skills, according to the study analysis.
It also advises teachers to use best practices in formative assessment, which include grading student papers anonymously, randomly ordering papers, and collecting multiple samples of work.
The report was produced by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which also supports coverage of school district and high school reform in Education Week, and published by the Washington-based Alliance for Excellent Education.
