A new book edited by Jal Mehta, Robert B. Schwartz, and Frederick M. Hess takes on that question head-on. The Futures of School Reform, released by Harvard Education Press, is the culmination of a three-year discussion among education leaders, a portion of which took place within the pages of Education Week and on edweek.org.
A seven-part series and blog—created by a working group led by the three authors—ran in Education Week and on edweek.org starting in the spring of 2011. The group included more than a dozen researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. The three authors are well-placed to edit such a volume: In addition to leading the working group, Mehta is an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education; Schwartz is a professor of the practice of education policy and administration and a former academic dean at the Harvard Graduate School of Education; and Hess is a resident scholar and director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. (Many of you probably know of Hess via his lively blog, Rick Hess Straight Up, which is hosted by Education Week.)
